In the heart of Kansas City, Sherwood Bible Church is making a significant impact by hosting Refine KC, a Christian school. Pastor David Pierce shares how this partnership came to be and offers insights on how churches can support Christian education. This story highlights the importance of faith, community, and being good stewards of the resources God has entrusted to us.

An Answer to Prayer

Sherwood Bible Church had been praying for years about how to use their facilities to serve the community. When Matt Barnard from Refine KC reached out for space to accommodate their growing school, it was a clear answer to prayer.

"We had been praying for about three and a half years, asking the Lord how to use our space effectively. When Matt sent that email, it was a delightful answer to prayer," Pastor David shared. This partnership was not just a convenient solution but a divine alignment of purpose and mission.

A Unique Church Property

The church's property is unique, having been a country club with swimming pools and tennis courts. For decades, Sherwood Bible Church used these facilities for community outreach, building relationships, and sharing the Gospel. Recently, they completed a gymnasium, adding another dimension to their community engagement.

"We want to use the gymnasium for community outreach, just like we used the pools and tennis courts. Hosting the school is a part of that vision," Pastor David explained. The church sees their property as a gift from God, meant to be used for His glory and service.

The Importance of Christian Education

Pastor David passionately believes in the value of Christian education. "The Bible is the only book that reads the reader. It provides answers for every field of study—science, mathematics, politics, and more. Supporting Christian education is essential because it integrates a biblical worldview into all aspects of learning," he said.

Sherwood Bible Church views hosting Refine KC as a ministry to the community, helping parents educate their children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. "No one loves our children more than mom and dad. But partnering with others who specialize in education is valuable," Pastor David noted.

Flexible and Creative Use of Resources

The church's willingness to adapt and use their resources creatively has been key to their success. They see the importance of being flexible and open to new opportunities to serve.

"Wouldn't it be great if the hallways were noisy with kids? Dirt isn't a problem; it's a sign of life. We communicated this vision to our people, getting them excited about the place being filled with kids," Pastor David shared. This vision has helped prepare the congregation for the changes and blessings that come with hosting a school.

Supporting Christian Education in Various Ways

For churches that can't host a school, there are still many ways to support Christian education. Pastor David suggests volunteering, offering to teach classes, or simply praying for local schools and educators.

"Start with a mindset of service. Offer to be a lunchroom buddy, teach a class, or participate in chapel. It's about serving the children and families, not about harvesting people for your church," he emphasized. Pastors can also engage in community outreach by calling schools and asking how they can pray for them.

Encouragement for Pastors and Churches

Pastor David encourages other pastors and churches to pray, be flexible, and trust the Lord with their resources. "Pray sincerely with humility and excitement. Trust the Lord through the process and be faithful stewards of His property," he advised.

He also highlights the importance of partnerships. "We are hosting Refine KC, but they are the ones doing the educating. It's a true partnership. Specialize in what you do and work together where possible," he said.

Conclusion

The partnership between Sherwood Bible Church and Refine KC is a powerful example of how churches can support Christian education. By being open to God's leading and using their resources creatively, Sherwood Bible Church is making a significant impact on their community. As Pastor David and his congregation have shown, with prayer, vision, and commitment, it is possible to serve families and advance God's kingdom through education.
