How One Therapist-Mom Found the Perfect Education Fit Through a Microschool

When Alexa Munger, a licensed therapist and mother of two, began exploring school options for her son, she had no idea she’d find herself entering the world of homeschooling—much less discovering the power and possibility of a micro school.
Alexa’s story is a familiar one to many parents: torn between work responsibilities and the desire to give her children the best educational and spiritual foundation, she faced a decision that felt impossible—until God opened a door she didn’t even know existed.
A Calling She Didn’t Expect

“I never imagined I’d homeschool,” Alexa admits. With a career in Christian counseling and two young boys at home, she assumed her children would attend public or private school—just like she and her husband had.
But around the time her eldest son, Colton, turned three, Alexa felt a stirring from the Lord: she was being called to homeschool. She resisted at first, unsure how she could juggle ministry, motherhood, and now, education. “I told the Lord, ‘You need to provide another option. I can’t do this full-time.’”
That provision came in the form of a Facebook post and a new school called Rooted Microschool—a hybrid microschool in Haven, Kansas.
Discovering a Microschool Model That Works

Rooted Microschool quickly became the answer to her prayers. Colton now attends classes two days a week, giving Alexa time to continue working as a therapist while still being hands-on in her children’s education the other days.
“I dropped him off the first day and immediately had peace,” she said. “It was everything we needed—individualized, faith-filled, and structured in a way that worked with our lives.”
Not only has the school nurtured Colton’s sensitive and thoughtful personality, but it has also supported the family’s values, incorporating Scripture-based learning and biblical truth into everyday lessons.
The Bigger Picture: What She’s Seeing in Her Work

Alexa’s insight as a therapist makes her story even more compelling. She works daily with children, teens, and even educators—many of whom are struggling within the traditional school system.
“Kids today are craving attention from their parents,” she explains. “Social media has distracted so many of us—not just the kids, but the parents too. There’s a deep need for connection and intentional time together.”
Alexa also hears growing concerns from public school teachers themselves: burnout, behavioral issues, and a general sense that today’s classrooms are not what they used to be.
Why She Chose to Say No to Public School—for Now

While Alexa affirms that every family has unique needs, she and her husband knew public school wasn’t the right place for their son—not yet. “My son is not a missionary yet,” she said. “He’s not spiritually or emotionally ready to be placed in an environment where I don’t know what’s happening for 35 hours a week.”
That insight comes from a place of love, not judgment. Alexa believes that children can absolutely be a light in their communities, but parents must use wisdom and discernment to know when they’re ready—and how to prepare them.
Rooted in Relationship and Faith

What Alexa found in Rooted Microschool was more than a school—it was a community. Teachers knew her children by name. They showed up for her son not only in the classroom but also in quiet moments afterward, offering emotional support, encouragement, and personal attention.
“I watched Ella, the founder, walk over to my son in the truck after school and simply love on him. That’s the kind of place this is.”
A Word to Other Moms
Alexa has a message for mothers who feel the stirring to do something different but are unsure how:
Listen to the nudge. If the Lord is calling you to homeschool or try something new, He will provide a way.
Pray and wait. The answer might not come right away, but clarity will come.
Explore hybrid options. Micro schools, hybrid models, and co-ops might offer the flexibility and support you didn’t know was possible.
You’re not alone. Communities are forming across Kansas and beyond—parents just like you, saying yes to a different path.
Conclusion: Education Doesn’t Have to Be All or Nothing
Alexa’s journey is a beautiful example of how homeschooling and professional life don’t have to compete. Through innovative school models like Rooted Academy, parents can answer both of their callings—with peace, purpose, and plenty of playtime in the dirt.
